I had this moment today, when I was retrieving my bike from the rack beside my job, where I realized how completely satisfied I was with my life. This occurrence happens frequently these days, ever since I made the decision to move out of my parents’ house and trust myself to succeed in the real world. Yes, ironically, after years of fear, the most satisfaction I’ve ever felt was when I was simply brave enough to try. You know what I mean, right? When you did that thing you didn’t imagine you could do and the result was greater than you could’ve anticipated. I’ve been really treasuring this feeling lately. It’s far easier to allow the overflow of our physical minds to distract us from the spiritual stillness in any given moment. This is exactly why when I reach my solar return, I am going to give up.

Okay, okay, not actually give up, but I’m definitely letting go of this whole, “better version of myself,” endless chase I’ve been doing since I first got serious about spirituality. Sometimes I go months without reading horoscopes or getting my cards read and it truly serves to be a spiritual reset. After all, our current self already is the Buddha. This means that the perfect version of ourselves and our lives is an unreachable, nonexistent goal. That version of yourself that you want to be doesn’t exist, while this imperfect version of yourself does exist. This means that the current version of yourself is the perfect version of yourself, simply because this is what you’ve become in a life where everything happens for a reason.

I know that the idea of everything happening for a reason can easily spiral into a lack of motivation or passion, by believing that there is no point to work for anything because things will happen anyways, but that isn’t the case. It simply serves a reassurance that, well, if it could’ve happened it would’ve.

You will likely not reach satisfaction in the amount of money you have or the relationships you have, especially with the mindset of having goals about these things. Let your complicated relationships and questionable resources guide you through the now. When I think of life, I imagine a video game where whatever you need during the current challenge is just sitting in your pocket.

This concept isn’t solely a spiritual one, either. The same goes for the way we perceive our bodies, our jobs, our art, etc. If we always have places to be and people to see, then where are we now and who are we with? By falling in love with everything we’re given in this exact moment, we genuinely allow the abundance to begin floating. You cannot manifest something that you do not believe you are worthy of having. If you believe that you must work harder, be better, or increase your value in any way in order to manifest something, you will not receive it. The universe gives only to those who think confidently that they are deserving of their manifestations. Think of all the shitty, rich people. They thought they were worthy of such finances and so they have it. We can be good, honest people and manifest things we deserve too.

I, for example, have been trying to manifest my body to be different while I’ve lacked the understanding that it needs my love right now to do so. While I have been judging my physical form, avoiding its reflection, I have been telling the universe that I am not ready for the manifestation of my new self. Instead, I must learn to love the body that exists right now. That’s it. There is no future self that I might love more.

Here are some things that can help you unlearn this concept:

Write a list of things you are skilled at already.
Meditate with a focus on appreciating how hard you’ve worked.
Paint or draw a self portrait. Draw hearts around it.
Write a short story about a moment you felt like the main character.
Take a walk and notice how chaotic and intentional nature is.
Make yourself a playlist that sounds like you.
Listen to a love song and think about only yourself while you do.
Tell your loved ones you appreciate them for who they are right now.
Begin that thing you thought you weren’t ready to begin.
