The Act of Creation

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

No, I am not a religious person. But I will tell you a little bit about why I, as a spiritual person, can cherish the words and stories of the bible nonetheless. My mother was raised Mormon but left the church to find answers herself. When I was a kid, around maybe eight years old, she said to me, “Sadie, you can believe in anything you want in this world and it will be true, even if it’s not about Jesus and God.” She spoke often of Jesus, referencing him as a man, a very long time ago, who cared so deeply about what he believed in that he experienced many human sufferings for it. This was the same time that I had posted a video on YouTube with views growing beyond my expectation, where many of the comments referred to me as, “the next birth of Jesus.” Whether or not this created my slight God complex into my adolescence was beside the point; I found myself humbled by such a thought. Jesus was just a man who shared what he believed in, after all.

The quote I’ve shared above from Romans 1:20 is one of those quotes that relays truth, even after all this time. People are surely without excuse once they are aware of their own divine energy. And what is God but our human perception of the infinite self within us anyways? So in those moments, when you see yourself for what you truly are, how can you make excuses for not expressing it? This is the foundation for the act of creation.

Creating anything, especially in this time period, can be incredibly difficult and yet simultaneously easier than it has ever been before. Much of the focus of creativity, especially in our work-focused world, is not what we create but rather how we create it. Most likely, those who chose to follow the path of graphic design, for example, may have been the painters of our society in another time. While, yes, painters still exist today, it is the integration of creation into our societal norms that enforces growth or stagnancy. And in a world where painters have been turned into advertisers, I find we are leaning more towards creative stagnancy. That is, at least, until we realize that psychology cannot be the driving force behind our impact on the world as we see in advertising, but rather the way we make others feel no matter what those feelings may be. Personally, I created the most when I had no expectation to succeed in any other way, back when I was an adolescent. It was especially at this time that I felt the need to express myself before it came out any other way.

When the unexpected grows its vines into my now adult life, creation gets pushed to the side, placed back on the shelf to collect dust for however long. Therein lies the irony of the time we find ourselves in now. We can pick up our phones and publish a podcast, video, blog, photo, or writing in just hours. And yet just when we need to express ourselves the most, we’ve become tired victims of ourselves. The unexpected will always come and we will always need to express ourselves. In fact, we will especially need to express ourselves when we face troubles. Most acts of creation are cries into the void along the lines of, “Have you felt this, too?” The more points of similarity we connect, the more feelings from within ourselves we can place as universal, the better we become as a team.

I hate the idea of saying anything like, “This is exactly what they do to make us incapable of success,” as if some corporation is specifically aiming at depriving the population of inspiration or motivation. In a stress health class I took during my final semester of college, my professor spoke mostly of the difference between everyone’s locus of control. Locus of control is where we place our own will. If you have an external locus of control, you believe that everything that happens to you is entirely in God’s or fate’s hands. If you have an internal locus of control, you believe that everything that happens to you is entirely in your own hands. Somewhere in the middle, we may accept the unpredictable events of life and also make the decisions necessary to navigate them ourselves without hopelessness. This is why I will never give up the will of my own power to an anonymous threat, not the government, big corporations, major religions, or even the illuminati.

The only thing missing from anyone not creating is an understanding of their divine self. No one else can create what you can create and only your perception of the creation truly prevails. As Lady Gaga said, “When I look back on my life, it’s not that I don’t want to see things exactly as they happened, it’s just that I prefer to remember them in an artistic way. And truthfully, the lie of it all is much more honest, because I invented it… It’s sort of like my past is an unfinished painting, and as the artist of that painting I must fill in all the ugly holes and make it beautiful again.” It is the art itself that reacts to the unpredictable experiences we face in life. It is the art itself that helps us claim our own power in life.

If you like drawings, consider… you get the point. View yourself as an infinite muse to draw ideas from and then make every idea that comes to mind.

I’m not insinuating that you love distracting yourself, but maybe just that you like it. You talk about the world like you’ll paint a picture of it at any second. The truth is you’re afraid of what other people think. Create something as if no one else will ever see it. Of course, I can’t promise it’ll be always be a private piece of art, but work with me will you? Imagine that no one will ever see this work of art. Imagine it will be buried, deep within in the Earth, once you’ve completed it. Then, when you’ve painted it as if it is disposable, show it to the entire world. Cancer, you are not invisible. You are real. You are realer than you know.

It’s okay to admit that you need a muse, Leo. I know that everyone expects you to be your own muse, but it’s perfectly normal that Leos find everyone else beside themselves as a muse. You look at all these beautiful, self-sufficient humans around you and think that they’re the epitome of success. The insecurity that you have about your creative self must die. You are not the crossroads of other, more worthy people. You are the worthy person. You can create whatever you want, however you want it to look. Comparison is not the key to judgement of good art. Good art is good art, and you are a good artist.

In order to find the creativity you seek, you must stop looking for things you’re currently working on. When you draw the Death card, it is more likely that the inspiration you seek is found in something you have never even attempted before. My intuition is strongly suggestion that you inspiration you need does not lie in traditional art, but rather physical art, something like dancing. Have you considered it? I’m sure you have. Well, then it’s my chance to tell you that 2021 is the year to practice that physical outlet you’ve wanted. Dancing may be it, but maybe boxing, running, biking, baseball, basketball, or anything aggressively passionate. Just do it.
